The Virginia Commonwealth University Health System’s Adult Day Program recently celebrated the 100th birthday of one of its participants, Emily Higgins, who was born Dec. 3, 1910.
Higgins was surrounded by friends, family and staff members at the VCU Adult Day Care Center who brought in jars filled with items that would remind her of them.
The 100th jar was presented to Higgins by Maria Curran, vice president of Human Resources and Family Services, who had filled the jar with events that happened in Higgins’ birth year. Along with the 100 jars, Higgins was given a quilt and book of portraits by children from the VCU Health System Child Care Center.
“I wish everyone here has a good day,” said Higgins, before blowing out candles on her birthday cake.
The adult day care center opened in 2007 with a mission to reduce stress and promote family harmony among VCU dependents and their families.
Higgins’ daughter, Frances White, brought Higgins to the center three years ago after she had brought her son there for child care services.
“There are not enough good things to say about the center and all the staff,” said White. “Every day Emily has spent here has been a good day.”
