RICHMOND, Va. (April 19, 2007) — The Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center’s Evans-Haynes Burn Center, in partnership with the Old Dominion Professional Firefighters Burn Foundation, will host the 9th Annual Burn Survivor Sunday.

The event will take place Sunday, April 22, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the MCV Alumni House, 1016 E. Clay St. Free parking will be available in the visitor parking lot adjacent to the hospital.

The event provides the opportunity for individuals who have survived a burn, and their families, to reunite with other burn survivors, staff members, caretakers, firefighters and volunteers who wish to share personal experiences and triumphs.

Given the recent tragic fires in the greater Richmond region, this timely event also will feature the launch of VCU’s new burn survivor support program known as Survivors Offering Assistance in Recovery or SOAR in conjunction with the Phoenix Society. The program offers emotional assistance to burn survivors, families and friends.

The celebration also will include children’s activities and fire safety information.

The Evans-Haynes Burn Center at the VCU Medical Center was founded in 1947 by Dr. Everett I. Evans and is the oldest civilian burn facility in the United States. Dr. B.W. Haynes later directed the burn center.

The Old Dominion Professional Firefighters Burn Foundation is a non-profit organization composed of healthcare professionals from the Evans-Haynes Burn Unit and Richmond metropolitan area firefighters. The foundation is dedicated to the advancement of care, research, prevention, education and the treatment of burns.
