For the second year in a row, Virginia Commonwealth University’s Staff Senate has presented the Virginia’s Caring University Scholarship Award to a select group of undergraduate students.

The scholarships, which range in value from $500 to $1,300, were presented to six students during a recent reception in the VCU Student Commons. Finalists were selected from students who applied for the awards last semester.

This year’s recipients include Amber Westbrook, Ashley Smith, Dong Hyok-So, Shanae Moore, Calvin Cropper Jr., and Joann White.

The VCU Staff Senate established the scholarships and sponsored a university-wide walk-a-thon fitness event in April. The event raised more than $10,000 for the scholarships. Last year’s event raised more than $4,000.

In addition to the contributions, various businesses in the community also donated money toward the scholarships.

The Virginia’s Caring University Scholarship Award is designed for juniors and seniors with a grade point average of 2.7 or higher. Applicants also must demonstrate a need for financial assistance and show involvement in past or present community service. Applicants also are required to submit a statement on why they feel they are eligible for the award.
