Matthew Desmond, Ph.D., author of “Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City,” which was awarded the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for general nonfiction and is Virginia Commonwealth University’s 2019 Common Book, will speak at VCU on Oct. 16.

Desmond, a Princeton University sociologist who founded the Eviction Lab, which built the first nationwide database of evictions, will speak at 6 p.m. at the Stuart C. Siegel Center, 1200 W. Broad St. His talk will be free and open to the public.

As VCU’s Common Book, “Evicted” was distributed to all first-year VCU students, as well as other VCU departments and community partners, through the Common Book Program of the University College. The program’s goal is to welcome new students to the vibrant intellectual culture of VCU and to provide them with an opportunity to explore complex social issues through an interdisciplinary lens.

Desmond’s visit is sponsored by the University College and the Office of the Provost.
