AAMC president to address VCU medical faculty on the future of medical education

WHO: Jordan Cohen, M.D., president of the Association of American Medical Colleges
WHAT: Cohen will present 21st Century Challenges for Medical Education as part of a daylong strategic planning process that the VCU School of Medicine has undertaken. He will offer insights into the major challenges currently facing medical schools; barriers to increasing racial and ethnic diversity in the medical profession; and threats to medical professionalism posed by the commercialization of medicine.
Throughout the medical school?s daylong planning retreat, faculty will participate in discussion groups designed to tackle current issues in medical education and determine future directions for curriculum, student training and faculty responsibilities.
Ten years ago, the medical school conducted a similar planning process, in which faculty evaluated curricular content. That session marked the beginning of a periodic review of the curriculum that ensures content is current with emerging diseases and medical advances.
