RICHMOND, Va. – Ron Clark, M.D., chief medical officer of the Virginia Commonwealth University Health System, will be honored with the Young Internist Award by the Virginia Chapter of the American College of Physicians - American Society of Internal Medicine. He will receive the award at the chapter’s 52nd annual meeting to be held April 27-28 at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in McLean.
Clark was chosen for the award in part for his work with the chapter's Associates' Abstract Competition, which he helped establish in 1997 and has directed for each of its four years. According to Jeffrey P. Harris, M.D., FACP, ACP-ASIM governor for Virginia, the program has been an outstanding educational experience for physicians in training in Virginia.
Over 250 internal medicine residents have participated in the program since its inception. This year, 77 abstracts were submitted by residents from the state’s five residency programs: VCU’s Medical College of Virginia Hospitals; the University of Virginia Health System; University of Virginia Roanoke-Salem; Eastern Virginia Medical School; and Portsmouth Naval Hospital.
Clark is an ACP fellow and has served on the Virginia Chapter's Governor's Council since 1998. In addition to his administrative duties with the VCU Health System, he maintains an active internal medicine practice.
The ACP-ASIM is the nation's largest medical specialty society. Its membership comprises more than 115,000 internists and medical students who specialize in the prevention, detection and treatment of illnesses that primarily affect adults.
