Saltanat Liebert, Ph.D., L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs
Liebert, assistant professor of public administration at the L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs, is author of a new book that examines irregular migration from post-Soviet states.

“Irregular Migration from the former Soviet Union to the United States” focuses on the experience of thousands of people from poor post-Soviet countries who migrated to the West legally and illegally in search of better-paid work to support themselves and their families.

Liebert’s book also details reasons for migration, offers profiles of the migrants, and explains the migration process and where migrants work once they reach the U.S. It is based on in-depth interviews with 48 migrants from the former Soviet states of Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan who now live in the U.S.

Liebert’s research interests include immigration policy, labor migration and human trafficking. Her book was published in August 2009 by Routledge.
