Virginia Commonwealth University’s incoming freshman class will begin to arrive on campus this weekend, moving into student dormitories as the university begins its annual “Welcome Week” schedule of activities.

VCU will enroll an estimated 31,600 students this fall. That number will include about 23,000 undergraduates. This year’s freshman class is expected to be approximately 3,800 students.

Freshmen will start to move into their dorm rooms on Saturday and Sunday, beginning at 9 a.m. each day.

Michael Rao, Ph.D., president of VCU, will be available on Saturday at 11 a.m. for media interviews about move-in days and the start of a new academic year. To arrange an interview, contact Cassie Williams, VCU Communications & Public Relations, 434-548-5271.

Eighty-nine percent of VCU’s freshman class is from Virginia, including 37 percent from northern Virginia and approximately 23 percent from the Richmond metro area. Minority students represent 47 percent of the freshman class.

Of VCU’s overall enrollment, 86 percent of students are from Virginia and 35 percent are minority students. The university has 1,380 international students, representing 96 different countries, including particularly large contingents from India, Saudi Arabia and China. VCU will enroll about 2,200 transfer students, which includes about 1,440 students from the Virginia Community College System.
