Summer has set in at VCU, but campus is far from slumbering. A brimming schedule of summer classes has students and faculty working in the university’s classrooms and labs, and a new set of incoming students has been visiting in waves, exploring their new home during orientation sessions.
A good way to keep tabs on the goings-on on campus, especially if you’re away for a spell, is through the university’s social media sites and the VCU News weekly newsletter. Both efforts highlight VCU’s latest news of note, ensuring you are always in the know. In addition, Across the Spectrum, a research blog, showcases the scope of VCU’s nearly $260 million research program across both its campuses.
VCU’s social media pages are ideal places to participate in ongoing campus conversations about news and events. A growing number of students, faculty, staff, parents, alumni and friends follow VCU on sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to interact and share photos, information, ideas and enthusiasm. The VCU Facebook page boasts one of the largest communities of followers in Virginia with nearly 85,000 fans. There are more than 200 official VCU social media sites where the VCU community can connect within academic programs, network with alumni, find information about admissions or keep up with various campus organizations and groups.
The VCU News weekly newsletter provides subscribers with a selection of compelling news in their email inbox every Thursday morning.
Featured content includes a selection of stories, videos and photos from VCU News, the university’s online news site. This week’s newsletter, for example, highlights a study abroad trip to Spain that puts students to work on community service projects, research efforts into tobacco cessation and the link between genes and cancer, and a new crime novel from a cinema professor.
The newsletter also collects news clips highlighting VCU projects and expertise and details upcoming events in the VCU community. For instance, this week’s newsletter includes links to an Op-Ed from President Michael Rao about VCU’s children’s hospital plans, a business professor’s thoughts on NASCAR’s new relationship with HP and a student project to provide supplies for veterans, as well as information about a Happy Hour event at the Anderson Gallery featuring a pair of talented VCU students who collaborate through poetry and music.
