Nestler Named Chair of VCU School of Medicine’s Department of Internal Medicine

John E. Nestler, M.D., an internationally recognized expert in polycystic ovary syndrome, has been named chair of the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine’s Department of Internal Medicine.

Nestler is a distinguished scholar who has an international reputation for his research on PCOS and in insulin resistance. He is the principal investigator on four National Institutes of Health grants, and his honors include the VCU School of Medicine Outstanding Research Achievement Award and the VCU School of Medicine Distinguished Mentor in Clinical Sciences Award. He also has authored more than 100 original publications and edited three books.

“This record of achievement is notable and broadcasts the excellence and importance of physician-investigators in the School of Medicine,” said Jerome F. Strauss, III, M.D., Ph.D., dean of the VCU School of Medicine. “He extends the history of excellence and national prominence of the VCU Department of Internal Medicine.”

Nestler, a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, is a former chief medical resident at MCV Hospitals. He has served as interim chair of the department since 2009. He was vice chair from 2003-2009 and was chair of the Division of Endocrinology. He holds the William Branch Porter Chair. His position became effective Dec. 1.
