Kenneth Daniels, Ph.D., professor, Department of Finance, School of Business
Daniels was appointed and sworn in as a board member of the Richmond Retirement System on Nov. 23. The Richmond Retirement System actively manages more than $450 million and is governed by a seven-member Board of Trustees appointed for three-year terms. Daniels has served on the Investment Advisory Committee of the Richmond Retirement System for the past three years and helped the Richmond Retirement System earn the Public Pension Standards Award.
Peter A. Boling, M.D., professor, interim division chair of Division of General Medicine and director of long-term care and geriatrics, Department of Internal Medicine
The Alzheimer’s Association recently recognized Boling with its Advocate of the Year Award for his work on behalf of geriatric patients, including those with Alzheimer’s disease.
Boling leads the VCU House Calls program that provides in-home primary care for home-bound, frail adults. Serving more than 5,000 patients, the program also exposes all VCU medical students to the House Calls approach.
Seeking a national house calls renaissance, Boling has worked with a small group of colleagues and members of U.S. Congress to design and pass the Independence at Home Act of 2009. This law amends the Social Security Act to provide frail high-cost Medicare beneficiaries with multiple chronic conditions access to in-home, coordinated, primary care through an interdisciplinary team, while lowering Medicare costs. This truly patient-centered medical home model is a demonstration pilot in the Affordable Care Act signed into law in March 2010. His work has drawn national media attention to VCU, including the NBC Nightly News’ “Making a Difference” segment.
John F. Duval, CEO, MCV Hospitals
Duval, CEO of MCV Hospitals, was elected chairman of the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association (VHHA). The VHHA is an alliance of hospitals and health delivery systems that develops and advocates health care policy for the Commonwealth.
“In times of profound change, it is incumbent upon us to embrace positive change, ensure the wisdom of our actions and not lose focus on stewardship,” said Duval. “We can’t take our eyes off of improving quality of care, patient safety, our information data systems and increasing our work force.”
Duval received his Master of Business Administration and a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences from the University of California, Irvine. In 2003 he became MCV Hospitals CEO, responsible for the overall management of the hospital, including administration, financial operations, patient care services, support services, clinical services and medical affairs.
