Retired VCU Professor Paul M. Umberger Dies

Paul Mitchell Umberger, who taught mathematics, calculus and economics at Virginia Commonwealth University for three decades, died Wednesday at the age of 79.
Umberger retired from the VCU School of Business in 1992, after 33 years — first at the Richmond Professional Institute, the precursor to VCU, and then in the School of Business’ Management Department.
Umberger served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, before earning his bachelor’s degree from Virginia Tech. He later earned his master’s degree in business administration from RPI.
He is survived by his wife, Jo Ann Bowman Umberger, three daughters, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
