Rosenthal Named Rector at VCU

Thomas G. Rosenthal, a Richmond business executive, today was elected rector of the Virginia Commonwealth University Board of Visitors by his fellow trustees, succeeding Dr. Edward H. Bersoff.

Rosenthal is chief executive officer of MedOutcomes, Inc., a company that provides continuing education for pharmacists. He founded the company with his wife, Wendy, a former assistant professor at the VCU School of Pharmacy.

Before founding MedOutcomes, Rosenthal was president and COO of Standard Drug Company, which had been the family business for 73 years. Standard Drug was sold in October 1993. 

"It is an honor to assume this leadership role on the Board of Visitors when VCU is executing a most-ambitious strategic plan toward becoming an internationally recognized research university," he said. "I'm looking forward to shepherding this university through the biggest expansion of its time, particularly with the pending opening of the Monroe Park Campus addition."

Rosenthal, 52, was appointed to his first term on the board in July 2002 by Gov. Mark Warner and to his second term in July 2006 by Gov. Timothy Kaine. He serves as a member of the Student Affairs Committee and as chair of the Academic and Health Affairs Policy Committee. He also is a member of the Board of Directors for the VCU Health System and a member of the Carolina Crescent board, a Medicaid HMO owned by the VCU Health System. He is a former member of the VCU School of Pharmacy's Advisory Board.

Rosenthal currently is chairman of the Commonwealth Broadcasting Corporation board of directors. He is a former member of the Governor's Task Force on Indigent Care, former president of Jewish Family Services and former chairman of the Valentine Richmond History Center.

Rosenthal attended the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business where he earned a B.S. in entrepreneurial management in 1976.
