School of Medicine honors outstanding faculty

Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine students, faculty and staff gathered in the Kontos Medical Sciences building to honor distinguished faculty at the 8th annual faculty excellence awards.

The faculty excellence awards, presented Oct. 11, recognize and reward teaching excellence in the School of Medicine. The awards honor faculty members for extraordinary accomplishments in teaching, humanism, professional development of women faculty and clinical excellence.

Awards and honorees included:

Faculty Teaching Excellence Award – David F. Gardner, M.D., professor in the Department of Internal Medicine, and Edward J.N. Ishac, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology.

Irby James Award for Excellence in Clinical Teaching – Brian J. Kaplan, M.D., associate professor in the Department of Surgery.

Distinguished Mentor in Basic Sciences Award – Chris Gennings, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Biostatistics.

Distinguished Mentor in Clinical Sciences Award – John E. Nestler, M.D., vice chair of the Department of Internal Medicine and chair of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism.

Educational Innovation Award – Isaac K. Wood, M.D., associate dean, Office of Student Affairs and associate professor in the Departments of Psychiatry and Pediatrics.

Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award presented by The Arnold P. Gold Foundation – Cheryl S. Al-Mateen, M.D., associate professor, Department of Psychiatry and Pediatrics; and Laurel J. Lyckholm M.D., associate professor, Department of Internal Medicine.

Women in Science, Dentistry and Medicine Professional Achievement Award – Wendy S. Klein, M.D., associate professor, Department of Internal Medicine and Obstetrics & Gynecology.

MCV Physicians Distinguished Clinician Award – Lenore Buckley, M.D., M.P.H., professor in the departments of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics.
