Sonali Gulati, assistant professor, Department of Photography and Filmmaking
Gulati’s short documentary film, “Nalini by Day, Nancy by Night,” has now been screened at nearly 50 venues in 2006. Recent awards for the film include First Prize International Short Film at the 24th International Cinematica Film Festival in Uruguay; the Ledo Matteoli Award for Best Immigrant Story at the 39th Annual Humboldt International Film Festival; Second Prize Documentary at the NextFrame Film Festival; and a Winner at the 16th Annual Rosebud Film & Video Festival.

Shawn O. Utsey, Ph. D., associate professor, Department of Psychology
Utsey has co-authored a book titled “Preventing Prejudice: A Guide for Counselors, Educators and Parents.”  This second edition provides an overview of prejudice and racism as well as practical exercises to help combat prejudice development in children, teenagers and adults. The book was written with Joseph Ponterotto, Fordham University; and Paul Pedersen, University of Alabama Birmingham.  Sage Publications released it in Aug. 2006.  Utsey also serves as editor in chief for the “Journal of Black Psychology.”

Les Harrison, Ph.D., assistant professor, Department of English
Harrison’s manuscript, “The Temple and the Forum: The American Museum and Cultural Authority in Hawthorne, Melville, Stowe and Whitman,” was selected to receive the Elizabeth Agee Manuscript Prize of the University of Alabama Press. The award honors a manuscript that represents outstanding scholarship in the field of American literary studies. The University of Alabama Press will publish “The Temple and the Forum” in the spring of 2007.
