State Nursing Organization Honors VCU Nurses

Seven nurses from Virginia Commonwealth University and the VCU Health System have been chosen for the Virginia Nurses Foundation’s first-ever "40 Under 40 Awards.” This award recognizes 40 registered nurses in Virginia under the age of 40 for their visionary leadership; dedication to new knowledge, innovation and research; professional nursing practice; superb advocacy; and their community engagement. Nominations were accepted from nursing leaders throughout Virginia in a wide range of health care settings.

The selected VCU registered nurses are Rocquel Crawley, director of ambulatory nursing; Deepa Krup, dialysis nurse clinician and newly appointed risk manager; Alison Montpetit, Ph.D., critical care clinician and associate professor in the VCU School of Nursing; Angela Starkweather, Ph.D., researcher and associate professor in the VCU School of Nursing; Chelsea Savage, risk manager; and Kevin Shimp, newly appointed nurse manager on acute care surgery. Also selected was acute care nurse practitioner, Annie Medina. Joyy Intal, nurse manager, and Karin Emery, nurse clinician, were honorable mentions. Recipients will be honored at the Virginia Nurses Foundation Gala on Sept. 24 at the Jefferson Hotel.

The Virginia Nurses Foundation honors nurses and their passion for quality health care and provides them with new opportunities in professional development, scholarship and research.
