Virginia Commonwealth University today (Nov. 11) announced a new initiative requiring all incoming freshmen to have a personal computer by fall 2001, ensuring that students have convenient access to the resources available on campus and on the Internet. In addition, student residence halls will be equipped with computer ports in every room and technology will be implemented to provide access for students living off campus as well.

VCU will establish baseline computer specifications to be revised annually for each new entering freshmen class. Using these specifications, VCU will negotiate pricing contracts with multiple computer providers for both Windows and Macintosh equipment. Those contracts may be used to purchase computers at discounted prices.

Data from a recent survey found that in 1999, 53 percent of incoming VCU freshmen had a computer and expected to use it while at VCU, and an additional 17 percent indicated they planned to purchase one.

The announcement was made today during VCU’s board of visitors meeting.
