The Virginia Commonwealth University Board of Visitors today approved an increase of tuition and mandatory fees for the 2007-2008 academic year.

The total cost of education for undergraduate, in-state students who live on campus with dining plans was set at $13,763, a 5.2 percent increase over the current academic year.

Tuition and fees for full-time, undergraduate Virginia students was set at $6,196, an increase of $377.  Out-of-state students will pay $18,740, an increase of $1,124.

In-state, full-time graduate tuition and fee charges will increase $563 to $8,904 for the academic year.  Out-of-state, full-time graduate students will pay $17,752, an increase of $170.

Tuition and fees for entering Virginia medical students will increase 6.5 percent, from $25,633 to $27,305.  Tuition and fees for entering out-of-state medical students will increase 4.4 percent, from $39,237 to $40,975.

"While not all of the state's public universities have set their budgets for the next academic year, we believe that VCU will continue to charge the lowest tuition among Virginia doctoral institutions," said VCU President Eugene P. Trani. "Our priority always is to keep costs as low as possible while ensuring that students receive a quality education."

University officials said that the tuition and fee rates reflect expected enrollment growth in the 2007-2008 academic year, enhanced undergraduate curricula and graduate research activities and an additional $552,000 for need-based financial aid.
