VCU BOV member selected as one of "America's Top Physicians" for 2003

Stephen P. Long, M.D., a member of VCU's Board of Visitors and clinical associate professor of anesthesiology at VCU, recently was selected by the Consumers' Research Council of America as one of "America's Top Physicians" for 2003.

The Consumer Research Council of America selected Long based on his experience, education and continuing education, community involvement, professional association memberships and clinical training in the area of anesthesiology and practicing pain medicine. He joins about 3,000 doctors from all 50 states and Puerto Rico, whose names will be listed in an e-book guide.

Long was also recently elected president of the Virginia Society of Anesthesiologists for a two-year tenure ending in 2005. In addition, he was elected to the Board of Directors of the American Society of Anesthesiologists for a five-year term.

Graduating Phi Beta Kappa with honors, Long completed his undergraduate studies in 1982 at Randolph Macon College in Ashland, Va. He received his medical degree in 1986 from VCU's School of Medicine where he also finished a surgery internship and junior surgery residency. In addition, he completed a three-year residency in 1991 in anesthesiology with specialty training in pain medicine at the VCU Medical Center.

Long was an associate professor of anesthesiology and director of the Pain Service at VCU until 1997, and has been a member of VCU's Board of Visitors since 1999. A Richmond resident, Long actively teaches anesthesiology to clinical and classroom students at VCU and is also president of Richmond's Commonwealth Pain Specialists.
