A lecture, a time capsule dedication and a gala are among the culminating activities planned this week for the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Nursing’s 125th anniversary celebration.
A 125th-anniversary lecture, time capsule dedication and lunch will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24. Cindy Munro, Ph.D., a former VCU Nursing Alumni Endowed Professor who is now a professor and dean of the University of Miami School of Nursing and Health Studies, will speak on the topic “Strategy and Agility: Moving Nursing Forward.” The lecture will be held in Younger Auditorium in the School of Nursing. The lunch and time capsule dedication will be held in the student lounge and the Younger Pavilion in the school’s garden.
The VCU School of Nursing 125th Anniversary Gala will be held at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, at The Jefferson Hotel. More than 250 faculty, staff, students, alumni, donors and friends are expected to attend.
Media are invited to both events and can RSVP by contacting Angela Flagg at the School of Nursing at (804) 828-1071 or flaggal@vcu.edu
A highlight of the gala will be a silent auction of two original artworks and one print donated by Baxter Perkinson, D.D.S., a past rector of VCU, community leader and avid watercolorist who donates his paintings to various philanthropies. The print is titled "When Nursing Flowered," in honor of the school's 125th anniversary. All proceeds from the artworks will go toward the VCU School of Nursing 125th Anniversary Scholarship.
Founded in 1893 as the Virginia Hospital Training School for Nurses, the School of Nursing has evolved from initially offering a diploma in nursing to bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degree programs. VCU School of Nursing has graduated more than 11,000 nurses and currently enrolls approximately 800 students annually.
