The Virginia Commonwealth University Staff Senate presents the 6th annual Virginia’s Caring University Scholarship Walk-A-Thon on March 30.
The walk is set for noon until 2:30 p.m. and benefits the Virginia’s Caring University Scholarship, which has assisted 44 students in the past five years. Scholarship recipients are rising juniors or seniors with a GPA of at least 2.7 who have demonstrated a need for financial aid and can show past or current community service.
“A gift can help open the door to a student’s future,” said Marquita Aguilar, chair of the Staff Senate Activities and Events committee. “We look forward to seeing VCU come together with our community sponsors to help raise funds for undergraduate VCU students.”
Last year’s event raised more than $9,700 in support of the scholarship fund.
Over the past five years, the Staff Senate has raised nearly $50,000 in scholarship contributions from the VCU and VCU Health System communities. Participants range from faculty and staff to students, alumni and VCU community members.
The event begins in the Commonwealth Ballroom at the Student Commons with an address by VCU President Michael Rao. A group warm up will take place before participants head to Monroe Park.
Participants walk at their own pace for as long as they wish. A light lunch is served at the Student Commons afterward. Vendors and sponsors are present, and door prizes are given away.
Some of this year’s community sponsors include Target, Sam’s Club, the Doubletree Hotel, the Jefferson Hotel and Stuffy’s Subs.
