Scott Thomas, executive director of the Magnet Schools of America, will discuss what magnet schools could offer the Richmond area as part of a discussion hosted by Virginia Commonwealth University and the University of Richmond on Feb. 25 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the VCU Student Commons, Richmond Salons III and IV, 907 Floyd Ave.

In his presentation, “Choice, Equity, Diversity and Student Success: The Magnet School Way,” Thomas will discuss federal funding, sustainability, the difference between magnet and charter schools, the history of magnet schools and desegregation, the contemporary role of magnet schools in changing urban and suburban communities, and more.

In March 2013, more than 300 public education advocates, practitioners, researchers, community members, policymakers and students gathered for a two-day conference hosted by VCU and UR to highlight diversity and equity as critical to success for all students in our region. The event, “Looking Back, Moving Forward,” generated interest about new ways to expand these opportunities, including the possibility of magnet schools.

The discussion is co-hosted by the School of Professional and Continuing Studies and the Center for Leadership in Education at the University of Richmond and the VCU School of Education. It is free and open to the public, but space is limited. For more information and to register, visit richmond.edu/movingforward.
