For the fourth consecutive year, Virginia Commonwealth University and members of the surrounding community have come together to take part in an event to benefit some of VCU’s students – the annual walk-a-thon.
This year’s event was the largest walk-a-thon to date with more than 200 participants. Sponsored by the VCU Staff Senate, the walk-a-thon raises funds for the Virginia's Caring University Scholarship, an undergraduate award for juniors and seniors in financial need with a grade point average of 2.7 or better and who can demonstrate past or current community service.
VCU President Eugene P. Trani acknowledged how the contributions have come from many departments across both campuses and at all levels including staff, faculty, students and members of the community.
“This is a university and community-wide effort and a great example of how we are able to come together as a community in supporting our students at VCU,” Trani said.
This year alone, the Staff Senate raised more than $11,600 in contributions from VCU, the VCU Health System and surrounding communities as of the date of the walk-a-thon. Prior to this year’s event, the Staff Senate raised more than $24,000 in scholarship funds during the walk-a-thon’s first three years.
Some of this year’s community sponsors included Target, Sam’s Club, Ab[Soul]ute Massage, the Barksdale Theater, the Richmond Braves, the Cheesecake Factory, Olive Garden, the Crown Plaza Hotel and the Jefferson Hotel.
“The Virginia's Caring University Scholarship continues to build educational bridges for future generations to come,” said Marquita Aguilar, Staff Senate activities and events chair. “This scholarship campaign has birthed a legacy that will be remembered.”
A VCU Staff Senate selection committee plans to review scholarship applications this fall.
