Dr. John Borgard, associate dean of undergraduate academic affairs in Virginia Commonwealth University's College of Humanities and Sciences, was recognized for 33 years of service to the university at a recent reception held in his honor.
Borgard, who will retire this month, first came to VCU in August 1971. He started out as assistant dean of what was then known as the School of Arts and Sciences.
While at VCU, Borgard served as assistant, then associate dean for undergraduate student academic affairs of the College. He was involved with two general education program changes, and co-chaired a major change in the university student information system. Borgard also was directly involved in helping to establish VCU's English language program and the Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies program.
"We have done well in providing students with the information and direction that they needed to graduate successfully from VCU," said Borgard. "I will always treasure the time that I have been able to spend with students to give them the direction that they needed to take the next step."
Borgard also said he was pleased to work with the numerous faculty members and administrators who helped shape the curriculum for undergraduate students.
"I cannot say enough about the staff members with whom I have worked closely each day at VCU, said Borgard. "I have watched them grow in their jobs or go on to other more engaging jobs elsewhere. Without their kind assistance to me and to the students and faculty, I could not have accomplished what I have done at VCU."
