Virginia Commonwealth University’s Department of Forensic Science celebrated its accreditation at a reception March 6.

The American Academy of Forensic Sciences in January awarded full, five-year accreditation to the bachelor of science degree in forensic science. The Forensic Science Education Programs Accreditation Commission, FEPAC, an arm of the larger organization, made the recommendation following a rigorous review. VCU’s graduate program in Forensic Science received accreditation last year, making it one of only five accredited graduate forensic science programs in the country.

At the reception, Williams Eggleston, right, chair of the department, thanked Dorothy Fillmore, at left, department coordinator, for her assistance in preparing for accreditation.

"This is an important, growing field of study,” Eggleston said. “We've gone from seven or eight students in our first year to over 400 now."
