Planning the future of West Hospital

Dear Colleagues,

I am writing to make you aware that VCU will undertake a "market sounding" process this summer to help us determine the best possible financially feasible uses for West Hospital. A key question we are exploring is if the building is reusable. Ongoing major maintenance work is needed to keep the building operational.

The selected consultant is a team of two architecture firms, Quinn-Evans and BCWH, who have joined forces with Brailsford & Dunleavey, a development advisory firm.

The timing is right to begin this process now since 19 percent of West Hospital’s occupants will move when the new College of Health Professions building opens in the summer of 2019 and another 19 percent of the occupants will move when clinics relocate to the new Adult Outpatient Facility in 2020. This process will outline possibilities but carries no obligation to enter into an agreement. The information we gather will be used to inform the ONE VCU Master Plan currently underway.

This is just the beginning of the process to determine West Hospital’s best reuse. We'll be sure to provide you with updates as additional information becomes available. Anyone with questions may contact Sarah Barber at sgbarber@vcu.edu.

Sincerely,

Meredith Weiss, Ph.D.
