The Virginia Commonwealth University School of Nursing will mark its 125th anniversary this year with a variety of activities to celebrate its tradition of being a leader in nursing education and research.

Founded in 1893 as the Virginia Hospital Training School, it has evolved from offering a diploma in nursing to currently offering bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degree programs. VCU School of Nursing has graduated more than 11,000 nurses and now enrolls approximately 800 students annually.

“Our school’s history is rich with defining moments that contributed greatly to the development of nursing education and shaped who we are today,” said Jean Giddens, Ph.D., dean and the Doris B. Yingling Endowed Chair. “We’re proud to mark our 125th year and celebrate the collective efforts of past leaders, faculty, staff, students and community partners for building such a game-changing legacy.”

To celebrate its anniversary, the school will host several events throughout the year. Among the highlights will be observance of the school’s 125th year during the MCV Campus Reunion Weekend for alumni from April 20 through 22. A birthday celebration will be held April 21 at 10:45 a.m. at Sadie Heath Cabaniss Hall.

The school also will hold a 125th anniversary gala on Oct. 25 at The Jefferson Hotel. More details will be announced as the date gets closer.

In recognition of its anniversary, the school will share historical milestones each Monday on Twitter and Facebook. Alumni and the community are invited to follow and participate in discussions, using the hashtag #VCUSON125. They can also visit the school’s 125th anniversary web page to stay up to date on celebration events and view a timeline of the school’s history.
